My husband is a huge fan of Cuban sandwiches, but unfortunately I have yet to find a Cuban dish that really grabs me. He works near Carmen’s so I joined him for lunch on a Friday afternoon to try it out.
The starter Cuban bread was pretty good. I ordered the Friday special of Fried Tilapia with yuca, yellow rice and black beans for $9 and my husband got the Cuban sandwich with fries for $7.
My husband loved the sandwich, and thought the fries were just fine too. For $7, he could come eat here every day and be happy. I tasted it, and yeah, it was okay for a Cuban. I’m not quite a fan though.
My dish was rather bland. Though the tilapia, rice, yuca and beans were adequately cooked, everything was pretty tasteless. It could have used some spice, some garlic, anything to give it more flavor. Regardless, the food itself was edible and I filled myself up for $9. That’s not so bad for a lunch.
The service was quite slow after we had gotten our meals, and it took some time before our server came back and our check finally came. Unfortunately I was actually very thirsty this day, so I really missed out getting a refill of water.
I’m sure my husband will be coming back week after week for their delicious Cuban sandwiches. I don’t think I’ll be returning though, unless I can find a Cuban dish here that I do actually like.
